Red Wing Shoes is a footwear company that specializes in producing durable boots.
Red Wing Shoes was founded by Charles H. Beckman in Red Wing, Minnesota in 1905. Within 10 years, the company had begun producing more than 200,000 pairs of boots per year, and issued the standard footwear to soldiers fighting in World War I. During World War II, Red Wing continued to manufacture boots for soldiers.
Red Wing Shoes also manufactures shoes under the brands Carhartt, Irish Setter Boots, Vasque, and Worx, and most recently expanded into making men's and women's lifestyle shoes. Red Wing's Heritage Lifestyle models range from athletic-styled sneakers to basic leather moccasins to rugged work boots. "Red Wing uses facilities in China to produce its WORX,Vasque, Irish Setter, and Carhartt products, as well as the upper portions of some Red Wingranded items."

Origins and History
In 1905, German immigrant hoe Man Charles Beckman was tired of simply selling shoes, so he closed his retail store and with 14 other investors formed the Red Wing Shoe Company on the banks of the Mississippi River in Red Wing, Minnesota. By tailoring its shoe lines to meet the lifestyles of specific customer groups such as farmers and railroaders, the company was successful enough by 1907 to produce over 100 pairs of footwear a day.
In 1908 the Red Wing Shoe Company developed welt-construction on their shoes, a design innovation that featured a leather strip attached to the shoe upper body and sewn into the sole. The added fit and durability appealed to farmers and other working men, Red Wing primary customer base. Behind the new demand, the company opened a four-story factory that saw production of over 450 pairs a day. In 1912, the company introduced the Chief, a new shoe aimed specifically at the farmer. The Chief utilized the popular welt-construction and was designed with specially-treated, manure-proof leather. The more durable shoes were a raging success.
By 1915, Red Wing was producing over 200,000 pairs of shoes a year, mostly due to the wide array of sizes, styles and specialty products offered. In 1918, the company produced the Munson U.S. Army Last, designed to it all feet with maximum comfort and durability. World War I soldiers were issued Red Wing Boot No. 16.
In 1920, J.R. Sweasy became president of the Red Wing Shoe Company, becoming the first member of a family that runs the company even today. Joining the company as a ost man in 1914, Sweasy leadership would steer the company to greater and bolder heights. In the early 1930s, with the advent of rubber, Sweasy revamped Red Wing shoe lines, incorporating the revolutionary new product. The new rubber soles and heels replaced the standard leather and set new trends industry-wide. Even today the shoe industry relies primarily on synthetic materials.
While the extreme durability and flexibility of rubber was important to Red Wing early success, perhaps the material most important quality was cost-effectiveness. With the country mired in the midst of the Great Depression, Red Wing introduced the Model No. 99, a durable shoe named after its low cost of 99 cents. While production of the Model 99 kept the company working during the country financial difficulties, the times weren easy for Red Wing employees. To save money on coal, workers in the Red Wing Shoe factory burned scrap leather to keep warm.
As World War II took hold of the country, the American military remembered the durability and comfort of Red Wing boots that endeared the brand to soldiers during the First World War. Red Wing began to manufacture boots for soldiers yet again, producing an unprecedented volume of footwear in 239 different sizes and widths.
In 1949, William D. Sweasy took over the company following the death of his father. Red Wing was beginning a time of great prosperity due to the company proven reliability to workers and soldiers alike. As the country emerged from wartime and started working and playing once again, Red Wing gained popularity as more than just a line of work shoes. While still maintaining its reputation for extremely durable and effective work shoes, Red Wing branched into casual footwear, or lifestyle shoes. Seeing the need for an even wider array of shoes, William D. Sweasy reorganized the company, emphasizing the importance of department heads and management teams in every department. Sweasy also introduced the idea of branching out of Minnesota, initiating a plan to open retail stores on the West Coast and eventually out east. The reorganization paid off quickly, and record profits were recorded in 1952, largely due to the success of the No. 877 Irish Setter Sport Boot.
The ixties were a time of renewed positivity and change for the world and for Red Wing. The company...(and so on)

Copper clad steel, also known as copper covered steel, the tradename Copperweld, or by its acronym CCS, is a bimetallic product, mainly used in the wire industry that combines the high mechanical resistance of steel with the conductivity and resistance to corrosion of copper. Its main purpose is to be used as a drop wire of telephone cables, and inner conductor of coaxial cables, including thin hookup cables like RG174, and CATV cable. The main producers are located in Argentina[1], Brazil, and USA.

Uses
Grounding, union of ground rods to metallic structures, meshes, substations, power installations and lightning arrestors. This material has proven its aptitude for these purposes. More than 60 years of installations all around the world certify the excellence of this type of installation.
Properties
Among the main properties of these conductors the following should be highlighted:
Good corrosion resistance of copper
High mechanical strength
High resistance against material fatigue
Lower electrical resistance compared to steel wire
Much lower impedance at high frequencies than that of steel conductors.
Advantages
Note: A valid reference for the following claims would greatly improve their usefulness. See discussion page.
Because the outer layer of the conductor is low-impedance copper, and the higher impedance steel is central, copper-clad RF transmission lines have similar impedance at high AC frequencies as solid copper conductors.
Tensile strength of copper-clad steel conductors is greater than that of ordinary copper conductors permitting greater span lengths than with copper.
Another advantage is that smaller diameter copper-clad steel conductors may be used in coaxial cables, permitting higher impedance and smaller cable diameter than with copper conductors of similar strength.
Due to the inseparable union of the two metals, it is theft resistant, because it is not practical to recover the copper. So the conductor has very little scrap value. Thus the frequent thefts common with pure copper conductors are avoided.
The installation with copper steel conductors are safe and fulfills the required specifications of a good grounding. For this reason it is used with preference by utilities and oil companies.

Stretch fabric is a term that refers to synthetic fabrics which stretch in all four directions. This is in contrast to normal fabrics that will often stretch to a small extent, although only in two directions.
Stretch fabrics evolved from the scientific effort to make fibres using neoprene. From this research, in 1958 commercial stretch fabrics ('elastomerics') such as spandex or elastane (widely branded as 'Lycra') were brought to the market.
Stretch fabrics simplify the construction of clothing. First used in swimsuits and women's bras, fashion designers began using them as early as the mid-1980s. They entered the mainstream market in the early 1990s, and are widely used in sportswear.
On a larger scale, the materials have also been adapted to many artistic and decorative purposes. Stretch fabric structures create contemporary and modern looking design elements that have many uses in corporate theatre and event production.mjm; its not mucj

Steven C. Hayes (1948 [1]) is Nevada Foundation Professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. He is known for an analysis of human language and cognition (Relational Frame Theory), and its application to various psychological difficulties (his work on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).
Hayes's work is somewhat controversial and was recently the subject of a lengthy story in Time Magazine (see reference below), as well as related stories in the popular media around the world including Salon.com, the Brazilian news magazine Veja, the German magazine Emotion, Oprah's magazine O, and other such outlets. His popular book Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life, rose to #20 on the Amazon.com list of all books in the Spring of 2006, and became the #1 self-help book in the US for a month, for a time outselling "Harry Potter" on Amazon. What seems to be most controversial, at least in the popular media (as is shown by the title of the piece in Time: "Happiness is not Normal"), is his claim that pain is ubiquitous and dominantly linked to normal language processes rather than abnormality. This has in particular placed Acceptance and Commitment Therapy somewhat at odds with mainstream Cognitive Behavior Therapy and empirical clinical psychology, despite the fact that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a form of behavioral and cognitive therapy. A number of similar methods have recently emerged in cognitive behavior therapy, however, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, suggesting that there is an ongoing struggle between traditional and new methods.
Dr. Hayes has been President of Division 25 of the American Psychological Association, of the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology and of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy (now known as the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies). He was the first Secretary-Treasurer of the American Psychological Society (now known as the Association for Psychological Science), which he helped form. An author of nearly 30 books and 400 articles, in 1992 he was listed by the Institute for Scientific Information as the 30th "highest impact" psychologist in the world during 1986-1990 based on the citation impact of his writings during that period.
He has been married three times and has four children, ranging in age from 38 to 1.

Structural pipe fittings, also known as slip on pipe fittings, clamps or pipe clamps are used to build structures such as handrails, guardrails, and other types of pipe or tubular structure. They can also be used to build furniture and theatrical riggings. The fittings slip on the pipe and are usually locked down with a set screw. The set screw can then be tightened with a simple hex wench. Because of the modular design of standard fittings, assembly is easy, only simple hand tools are required, and risks from welding a structure are eliminated.
Other advantages of using structural pipe fittings are easy installation and reconfigurable design. Since there are no permanent welds in the structure, the set screws of the fittings can simply be loosened, allowing them to be repositioned. The project can be disassembled and stored if needed, or even taken apart with fittings and pipe recycled into a new project.
Fittings used for strong structures are usually cast metal, and come in many styles such as elbows, tees, crosses, and flanges. The fittings are not threaded; they simply lock onto the pipe with the supplied hex set screws.

Typical double-sided machine with horizontal mold shuttling
Shuttle machines are a significant workhorse in the extrusion blow molding of hollow plastic articles such as bottles for food storage.
Description
Shuttle machines are either single-sided or dual-sided machines, and can be manufactured to produce one- to six-layer containers - although the number of suppliers who produce 4-6 layer machines is limited. In a single sided machine, the mold "shuttles" under the flowhead, closes to capture the parisons, then moves away from the head. Blow pins are then forced downward into the molds, helping to "calibrate" the necks while air is forced into the cavity to blow the container. The shuttle motion allows the bottles to be blown and cooled to the side, without interfering with the parisons, which are continually extruding from the flowhead. In a double sided shuttle machine, there is a mold on each side of the flowhead, one shuttling to the right, and one to the left, which generally doubles the output of a single-sided machine.
Shuttle machines may extrude single or multiple parisons, and are characterized by the number of parisons and the horizontal spacing between the parisons. For example, a "4x100" shuttle extrudes four parisons, spaced 100 mm between the centers. This would require a platen (for attaching the molds) greater in size than 400 mm, to accommodate the required mold width. The horizontal or angled shuttling distance is thus greater than 400 mm for a 4x100 shuttle machine. In general, shuttle machines up to 2x100 mm spacing are considered small machines; shuttles up to 6x100 mm spacing are considered mid-sized machines; shuttles larger than this are typically referred to as "long-stroke" machines.
Shuttle machinery is used widely in the production of personal care bottles, medical bottles, and some small industrial containers.
Sequence of operation

Shuttle machinery is used widely in the production of personal care bottles, medical bottles, and some small industrial containers
The steps required for a shuttle machine to blow mold a hollow plastic object can be described by the following sequence of operations:
As the dropping parisons approach the length of the object to be blown, the mold, in open position, shuttles sideways to a point directly under the head of the machine.
The molds close to capture the parison.
A knife cuts the parisons directly above the molds. This may be either a cold knife (cutting with a sharp edge) or a hot knife (burning through the parison).
The molds shuttle away from the head until they are directly under the blow pin stations. If the mold movement is horizontal, the extruder head is made to bob up vertically, so that the continuously extruding parisons do not drag against the mold as it moves sideways. In some shuttle machinery, the molds shuttle down at an angle, eliminating the need for the head and extruders to bob upwards.
The blow pins are forced down into the still-open necks of the containers, calibrating the necks of the containers. In most cases, the blow pins punch down onto striker plates, which form the top edge of the neck to a precise flat dimension.
Air pressure is applied to blow the containers. In many cases, the blow air is turned on before the blow pins enter the open neck of the parison, to force the plastic outward and ensure a good neck formation.
After the containers have cooled, the molds open, and again shuttle under the head of the machine. As the molds close on the molten parisons, masking stations that are attached to the sides of the mold close over the outside of the previously blown containers, which are still held in place by the blow pins.
The blow pins retract, leaving the containers held only by the masks.
As the molds again shuttle sideways, the masks transfer the formed containers sideways to a punching station. Punches come forward to remove the tails, top moil, and any handle (grip) slugs away from the bottles.
The bottles are then conveyed out of the machine. This may be done by transferring the bottles onto conveyor belts, by takeout devices, or by simply dropping the bottles into a chute or onto a takeaway conveyor.
Advantages & disadvantages
Shuttle blow molding equipment offers the following advantages:
Relative low cost compared to other extrusion blow molding machinery
Capable of producing high-quality "calibrated neck" finish with blow pins
In-machine trimming - finished bottles exit the machine
Capable of producing bottles of all shapes - including handleware
Coextrusion capability, with up to six layers of plastic
Shuttle machines have some limitations:
Not cost effective for extremely high volumes
Reduced bottle weight consistency compared to rotary wheel machinery, due to inevitable variations...(and so on)

Case hardening or surface hardening is the process of hardening the surface of a metal, often a low carbon steel, by infusing elements into the material's surface, forming a thin layer of a harder alloy. Case hardening is usually done after the part in question has been formed into its final shape, but can also be done to increase the hardening element content of bars to be used in a pattern welding or similar process.

History
Early iron melting made use of bloomeries, which produced two layers of metal, one with a very low carbon content that is worked into wrought iron, and the rest a high carbon cast iron. Since the high carbon iron is hot short, meaning it fractures and crumbles when forged, it was not useful without more smelting. The wrought iron, with nearly no carbon in it, was very malleable and ductile, but not very hard.
Case hardening involved packing the iron in a substance high in carbon, and heating it in that environment to encourage carbon to migrate into the surface of the iron. This formed a thin layer of higher carbon steel on the surface, with the carbon content gradually decreasing further from the surface. The resulting product had much of the toughness of the softer iron core, with the hardness and wear resistance of the outer steel.
The traditional method of applying the carbon to the surface of the iron involved packing the iron in a mixture of ground bone and charcoal or a combination of leather, hooves, salt and urine, all inside a well-sealed box. The resulting package is then heated to a high temperature, but still under the melting point of the iron, and left at that temperature for a length of time. The longer the package is held at the high temperature, the deeper the carbon will diffuse into the surface. Different depths of hardening would be needed for different purposes; sharp tools would need deep hardening to allow them to be ground and resharpened without exposing the soft core, while machine parts like gears might need only a shallow hardening for increased wear resistance.
The resulting case hardened part may show a distinct coloration on the surface. The iron darkens significantly, and shows a mottled pattern of black, blue and purple caused by the various compounds formed by impurities in the bone and charcoal. This oxide surface works similar to bluing, providing some degree of corrosion resistance, in addition to being considered by many to be a very attractive finish. Case coloring refers to this pattern, and is commonly encountered as a decorative finish on replica firearms such as those patterned after single action Colt revolvers and lever-action rifles.
With modern steelworking techniques, it is possible to make homogeneous steels of low to high carbon content, removing much of the original motivation for case hardening. However, the heterogeneous nature of case hardened steel may still be desirable, as it provides a combination of hardness and toughness that cannot readily be matched by homogeneous alloys.
Chemistry
Carbon itself is solid at case-hardening temperatures and so is immobile. Transport to the surface of the steel was as gaseous carbon monoxide, generated by the breakdown of the carburising compound and the oxygen packed into the sealed box. This takes place with pure carbon, but unworkably slowly. Although oxygen is required for this process it's re-circulated through the CO cycle and so can be carried out inside a sealed box. The sealing is necessary to stop the CO either leaking out, or being oxidised to CO2 by excess outside air.
Adding an easily decomposed carbonate "energiser" such as barium carbonate breaks down to BaO + CO2 and this encourages the reaction
C (from the donor) + CO2 <> 2 CO
increasing the overall abundance of CO and the activity of the carburising compound.
It's 'common knowledge' that case-hardening was done with bone, but this is misleading. Although bone was used, the main carbon donor was hoof and horn. Bone contains some carbonates, but is mainly calcium phosphate (as hydroxylapatite). This doesn't have the beneficial effect on encouraging CO production and it can also supply phosphorus as an impurity into the steel alloy.
Modern use
Both carbon and alloy steels are suitable for case-hardening; typically mild steels are used, with low carbon content, usually less than 0.3% (see plain-carbon steel for more information). These mild steels are not normally hardenable due to the low quantity...(and so on)
