Career
He was born in Sale, Cheshire, England. It was at Manchester Grammar School where his affinity for Sir Thomas More developed. He attended Manchester University, and after war service Exeter University. For many years he taught English and history at Millfield School and only became a full time writer at the age of 33 when his play The Flowering Cherry was staged in London in 1958, with Celia Johnson and Ralph Richardson.
Although he was best known for his original play A Man for All Seasons - a depiction of Sir Thomas More's clash with King Henry VIII over his divorce from Catherine of Aragon - which won awards on the stage and in its film version, most of his writing was screenplays for films or television.
Bolt was known for dramatic works that placed their protagonists in tension with the prevailing society. He won great renown for A Man for All Seasons, his first iteration of this theme, but he developed it in his existential script for Lawrence of Arabia (1962). In Lawrence, he succeeded where several before him had failed, at turning T. E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom into a cogent screenplay by turning the entire book on its head and making it a search for the identity of its author. Lawrence, by Bolt, is presented as a misfit both in English and Arab society.
It was at this time that Bolt himself fell foul of the law and was arrested and imprisoned for protesting nuclear proliferation. He refused to be "bound over" (i.e, to sign a declaration that he would not engage in such activities again) and was sentenced to one month in prison because of this. The producer of the Lawrence film, Sam Spiegel, persuaded Bolt to sign after he had served only two weeks. Bolt later regretted his actions, and did not speak to Spiegel again after the film was completed. Later, with Doctor Zhivago, he invested Pasternak's sprawling novel with some sense of narrative and the characteristic Bolt dialogue - human, short and telling. The Bounty was Bolt's first project after a stroke, which affected not only his movement, but his speech. In it, Fletcher Christian takes the "Lawrence" role of a man in tension with his society who in the process loses touch with his own identity. The Mission was Bolt's final film project, and once again represented his thematic preoccupations, this time with 18th century Jesuits in South America. Bolt's final produced script was Political Animal, later made into the TV movie Without Warning: The James Brady Story (1991), about the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan and the struggles of his press secretary, James Brady, to recover from a near-fatal gunshot injury he received in the process. Bolt was initially reluctant to make the film, but after meeting with Brady he felt he could relate to Brady's struggles with a cerebral injury; thus, a lot of his own experiences recovering from his stroke found their way into the script.
Robert Bolt was married four times, twice to the actress Sarah Miles. His first wife was Jo Riddett, who divorced him in 1963; she became a successful novelist. In the early '80s he had a short-lived marriage to Ann Queensbury. He had four children: Sally (who died in a car crash in 1982), Ben (who later became a film and television director), Joanna, and Tom (who battled heroin addiction as a young adult before becoming a successful watchmaker). He suffered a heart attack and a stroke which left him paralysed in 1979. He died aged 70, in Petersfield, Hampshire, England following a long illness. He had been appointed CBE in 1972.
Partial list of plays
Bolt wrote several plays for BBC Radio in the '50s, as well as several unproduced plays, so this list is incomplete. Many of his early radio plays were for children, and only a few (see below) were adapted for the stage.

Cast-iron architecture is a form of architecture where cast iron plays a prominent role. It was a prominent style in the Industrial Revolution era when cast iron was relatively cheap and modern steel had not yet been developed.

Structural use
Cast iron has been used for centuries, and was used occasionally in architecture in the pre-modern period. It was in eighteenth century Britain that new production methods first allowed cast iron to be produced cheaply enough and in large enough quantities to regularly be used in large building projects. One of the first important projects was The Iron Bridge in Shropshire, a precedent setting structure made almost entirely of cast iron. However, it was grossly over-designed, and the makers (principally Abraham Darby) suffered financially as a result. The quality of the iron used in the bridge is not high, and nearly 80 brittle cracks are visible in the present structure. Later designers and engineers, such as Thomas Telford improved both the design and quality of the material in his bridges (for example, at Buildwas upstream of Coalbrookdale) and aqueducts (such as the world-famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in North Wales.)
Architectural use

The highly decorative, Gothic style, cast iron Eglinton Tournament Bridge
In the 1850's the cheapness and availability of cast iron led James Bogardus of New York City to advocate and design buildings using cast iron components. Cast iron could be forged into a wide array of shapes and designs, allowing elaborate facades that were far cheaper than traditional stone carved ones. These facades could also be painted a wide array of colours. Many of these buildings had elaborate neo-classical or Romanesque designs. Mostly used on commercial and industrial buildings there are many surviving examples, especially in the SoHo and Tribeca areas of New York. One of the most intact ensembles in the American West can be seen in the Skidmore/Old Town Historic District, a National Historic Landmark in Portland, Oregon. In Europe the best preserved examples of Victorian cast-iron warehouses can be viewed in Glasgow, Scotland , a city which experienced an enormous expansion in the late 1800s.
Cast iron columns had the advantage of being slender, compared with masonry columns capable of supporting similar weight. Tha saved space in factories and other kinds of buildings, and enable architects of theaters, churches and synagogues to improve sight lines when supporting balconies.
Cast iron also became the standard support structure in the construction of greenhouses, and this type of design led to the monumental Crystal Palace built in London in 1851. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the glass and cast iron structure was much imitated around the world.
In the late nineteenth century modern steel was developed, and it proved far more suitable to cast iron for structural and support purposes. The fashion for forged cast iron facades also faded in this era. Many of the innovations of the cast iron period were carried over to the new steel frame buildings, and were essential to the development of the modern skyscraper.
Catastrophic Failures

Original Tay Bridge from the north

Fallen Tay Bridge from the north
Cast iron has some architectural advantages, and some weaknesses. It is strong in compression (although weak in tension and bending), and its strength and stiffness deteriorate when subjected to the high heat of a fire. In the early era of the industrial revolution it became popular to use cast iron in factory construction, in part owing to the misconception that such structures would be "fireproof." Cast iron was strong enough to support the heavy machinery but was vulnerable to the frequent fires that would occur in such factories. William Strutt pioneered this innovation, building a number of industrial buildings using cast iron supports. However, there were numerous building collapses caused by brittle fracture of large cast iron beams, where the bottom side of the beam was in tension, often from defects such as blow holes within the beams. Internal defects like blowholes were common in large beams. Cast iron was also used widely in bridge construction for the new railway system, sometimes with horrific results, especially when cast iron girders were used instead of arches. The first use was at the Water Street terminus of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830 to a design by William Fairbairn, a successful design which was demolished about 1900 owing to the widespread concern about cast iron under bridges on the rail network in Britain. A Yanmar 2GM20 marine diesel engine, installed in a sailboat. The center flywheel is the crankshaft, the lower left one the seawater pump, the upper right one the alternator.
The Yanmar 2GM20 is an inboard marine diesel engine manufactured by the Japanese company Yanmar Co. Ltd.. It is used in a wide range of sailboats and motorboats.

Specifications
It is a four-stroke, vertical, water cooled diesel engine. It is built around two cylinders (hence the "2" in 2GM20) of 75mm in length and 72mm in stroke, adding up to 0.635 liters in displacement: each cylinder is roughly the size and volume of a 300ml soft-drink can. The compression system uses a proprietary swirl-type pre-combustion chamber.[1]
The continuous rating output at the crankshaft is 11.8 kW, and 3400 revolutions per minute (rpm). The maximum output at crankshaft is 13.4 kW, and 3600 rpm.[2]
The engine delivers roughly 20 horsepowers (hence the "20" in 2GM20), for a weight of about 114 kg.
The engine is equipped with a starting motor (D.C. 12V, 1kW), and an alternator to provide electricity and charge onboard batteries (12V, 55A).
The engine is typically activated by a key and a starting motor switch. Upon turning the key and pressing the starting motor switch, the hot cooling water alarm and the oil pressure alarm will ring for about a second until the engine starts to run. The exit of cooling water from the exhaust into the sea (typically at the aft of the boat) should be checked at that time. After a few minutes, the hot cooling water alarm will again sound if the cooling water does not get through the engine (as when the seawater cock has remained closed -most likely case- or if something is clogging the seawater tubing).
Water pump

Yanmar 2GM20 seawater pump. Cooling seawater get in from the tube on the left.
The 2GM20 series uses either a seawater cooling system, or a freshwater cooling system (specified by the letter F). Seawater is pumped into the engine through a seawater pump (impeller type). In the engines equipped with a seawater cooling system, seawater is used to cool the internals of the engine directly. The engines equipped with a freshwater cooling system have an additional heat exchanger, where heat transfer occurs between the seawater and internal freshwater.
The impeller of the seawater can suffer from wear and tear, especially when run dry for some period of time, in which case it has to be replaced to avoid loss in the flow of cooling seawater, a potential source of engine overheating.
The seawater pump is rotated by a short belt linked to the crankshaft.
Fuel filter

Yanmar 2GM20 fuel filter.
An inline fuel filter is easily accessible from the front part of the engine. The filter allows to retain dust particles and separate water from diesel (as water is heavier than diesel, it will settled at the bottom of the filter), just before the diesel fuel enters the highly sensitive high-pressure fuel pump. Water inside diesel fuel can lead to rusting of the internals of the engine, as well as lubrication problems. The filter is made of a metallic mesh.
When the engine has to be bled because air has penetrated into the pipes (usually after running out of diesel), it will usually be necessary to bleed the diesel filter: the top vent is unscrewed so as to let excess air escape, while diesel fuel is pumped into the fuel filter with the manual fuel lift pump (just behind the yellow dipstick). The vent can be screwed shut when diesel fuel starts to gush out of it.
A primary fuel filter is usually installed upstream of the engine, so as to filter out the larger particles, and filter a larger quantity of water that might be present in the fuel.
Every time a filter is disassembled or changed, it will be necessary to bleed it so as to remove excess air, again by opening the top vent so as to let diesel chase all the air (diesel fills up the filter either through gravity -usually the case for the primary filter- or with the help of the fuel lift pump -usually the case for the engine fuel filter-) and diesel starts to gush out. The vent should then be screwed shut.
New models
The 2GM20 and 3GM30 (three cylinder) series have now been superseded in the Yanmar catalog by new lightweight and modernized engines, the 2YM15, 3YM20 and 3YM30. These new engines also feature simplified maintenance of the seawater pump and other services points, as they are now located on the front part of the engine.[3] These new engines also meet new Tier II emission standards introduced in the EU and the US in 2006.[4]
