Origins and History
In 1905, German immigrant hoe Man Charles Beckman was tired of simply selling shoes, so he closed his retail store and with 14 other investors formed the Red Wing Shoe Company on the banks of the Mississippi River in Red Wing, Minnesota. By tailoring its shoe lines to meet the lifestyles of specific customer groups such as farmers and railroaders, the company was successful enough by 1907 to produce over 100 pairs of footwear a day.
In 1908 the Red Wing Shoe Company developed welt-construction on their shoes, a design innovation that featured a leather strip attached to the shoe upper body and sewn into the sole. The added fit and durability appealed to farmers and other working men, Red Wing primary customer base. Behind the new demand, the company opened a four-story factory that saw production of over 450 pairs a day. In 1912, the company introduced the Chief, a new shoe aimed specifically at the farmer. The Chief utilized the popular welt-construction and was designed with specially-treated, manure-proof leather. The more durable shoes were a raging success.
By 1915, Red Wing was producing over 200,000 pairs of shoes a year, mostly due to the wide array of sizes, styles and specialty products offered. In 1918, the company produced the Munson U.S. Army Last, designed to it all feet with maximum comfort and durability. World War I soldiers were issued Red Wing Boot No. 16.
In 1920, J.R. Sweasy became president of the Red Wing Shoe Company, becoming the first member of a family that runs the company even today. Joining the company as a ost man in 1914, Sweasy leadership would steer the company to greater and bolder heights. In the early 1930s, with the advent of rubber, Sweasy revamped Red Wing shoe lines, incorporating the revolutionary new product. The new rubber soles and heels replaced the standard leather and set new trends industry-wide. Even today the shoe industry relies primarily on synthetic materials.
While the extreme durability and flexibility of rubber was important to Red Wing early success, perhaps the material most important quality was cost-effectiveness. With the country mired in the midst of the Great Depression, Red Wing introduced the Model No. 99, a durable shoe named after its low cost of 99 cents. While production of the Model 99 kept the company working during the country financial difficulties, the times weren easy for Red Wing employees. To save money on coal, workers in the Red Wing Shoe factory burned scrap leather to keep warm.
As World War II took hold of the country, the American military remembered the durability and comfort of Red Wing boots that endeared the brand to soldiers during the First World War. Red Wing began to manufacture boots for soldiers yet again, producing an unprecedented volume of footwear in 239 different sizes and widths.
In 1949, William D. Sweasy took over the company following the death of his father. Red Wing was beginning a time of great prosperity due to the company proven reliability to workers and soldiers alike. As the country emerged from wartime and started working and playing once again, Red Wing gained popularity as more than just a line of work shoes. While still maintaining its reputation for extremely durable and effective work shoes, Red Wing branched into casual footwear, or lifestyle shoes. Seeing the need for an even wider array of shoes, William D. Sweasy reorganized the company, emphasizing the importance of department heads and management teams in every department. Sweasy also introduced the idea of branching out of Minnesota, initiating a plan to open retail stores on the West Coast and eventually out east. The reorganization paid off quickly, and record profits were recorded in 1952, largely due to the success of the No. 877 Irish Setter Sport Boot.
The ixties were a time of renewed positivity and change for the world and for Red Wing. The company...(and so on)
