The 2009 Major League Baseball season began on Sunday, April 5, 2009 with the Atlanta Braves defeating the 2008 World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies 4-1. The regular season, in a historic first, will end on October 4. The postseason is scheduled to begin three days later with the Division Series. The 2009 World Series will begin on October 28, and will end no later than November 5 (barring postponements due to weather), marking the second time the season will be completed in November; the only other time was in 2001, that due to the delaying of the end of that season because of the September 11 attacks. November baseball is guaranteed, as Game 4 will be played on Sunday, November 1 (barring postponements due to weather). Home field advantage for the Series will be decided at the All-Star Game on July 14 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition, the annual Civil Rights Game will become a regular season game, scheduled for June 20 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio when the host Cincinnati Reds play the Chicago White Sox in an interleague game.

Managerial news
One team that has made a change is the Milwaukee Brewers. It was announced on October 17, 2008 that Dale Sveum, who became interim manager after Ned Yost was dismissed with two weeks left in the season, would not get the job on a permanent basis. The team won the National League Wild Card on the last scheduled day of the 2008 season under Sveum, but lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS. Taking their place will be former Oakland Athletics skipper Ken Macha, who was named on October 30.
The other team with a new skipper will be the Seattle Mariners, naming Don Wakamatsu as their new field general on November 19 after a season where the M's reverted to the form of the 1970s and 1980's by losing 100 games with a payroll of over US $100 million. Wakamatsu, who becomes the first manager of Asian-American decent, was hired by the team's new general manager, Jack Zduriencik, who was previously a special assistant for the Brewers. Both Macha and Wakamatsu join Cito Gaston, who will begin his first full season in his second term as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Jerry Manuel who will be in his first full season as skipper of the New York Mets.
Rule changes
On January 15, the owners of the 30 Major League Baseball clubs approved two rule changes governing the playing of postseason and one-game playoff games.
All "postseason games and games added to the regular season to determine qualifiers for the postseason" become suspended games if they are called before nine innings are played, regardless of whether the game would otherwise qualify as an official game, or the score at the time the game is called. The game is resumed when conditions permit at the same location from the point of suspension. This rule change codifies the controversial interpretation of the official rules made by MLB commissioner Bud Selig during Game 5 of the 2008 World Series.[1]
Coin tosses will no longer be used to determine home-field advantage for one-game tiebreakers held to determine division champions or wild card teams. Instead, "performance-based criteria" including head-to-head record between the tied clubs will be used to determine home-field advantage. [1]
Approaching milestones
There are several players approaching milestone moments in the coming season.
Topping the list is the Gary Sheffield of the New York Mets who is just one home run away from becoming the 25th member of the 500 Home Run Club. On the pitching side, San Francisco Giants lefty Randy Johnson needs five more wins to become the 24th member of the 300 win club, and 211 strikeouts away from becoming the second pitcher to reach 5,000 (after Nolan Ryan). New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera needs just 18 more saves to become only the second pitcher to reach 500 saves in his career, joining Trevor Hoffman, now a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Other players who may approach historic milestones in 2009 include the following:
In the category of 400 home runs, Jason Giambi who rejoins the Oakland Athletics is four away, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero is eight away, free agent Jim Edmonds is eighteen away, and Andruw Jones of the Texas Rangers is twenty-nine away.
Carlos Delgado of the New York Mets is 31 home runs away from 500; he hit 38 last season.
Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees needs 47 more homers to become only the seventh player in Major League Baseball history to reach the 600 home run plateau and 34 to pass Frank Robinson for seventh...(and so on)
